Get to Know Me
I was born in San Diego, CA, when my father, a Marine infantry officer, was stationed at Camp Pendleton. We moved around a lot when I was a kid, but I eventually settled in Stratford, CT, after getting a job as an electrical engineer in Manhattan, New York City.
I spent most of my time swimming, both in high school and at the Academy, but it’s a matter of no small significance to me that I’ve made friends outside the team as well. My best friends today are not just former swimmers; they’re also successful officers and leaders, and I hope that says something about me by association.
I liked West Point because the enforced importance of academics forced me to really learn what the Academy was trying to teach me. When I wasn’t studying or swimming, I was drinking beer. My love for craft beers dates to at least 1993.
I’ve been married to the former Sally Duffy since December 2002. We have two daughters, Hannah and Emma, and a dog, Faith.
I wrote a memoir about my swimming career and my family a few years ago call Swim, Bike, Run, Live, Love Repeat. It’s a consensus five-star read!
I also keep a personal blog called Casa Cabeza.
Barracks: Scott then Grant. I was in divisions all four years.
Favorite Mess Hall Meal: Pizza Pockets
Favorite Memory: Winning the 200 Butterfly at the Army-Navy Swim Meet as a plebe in 1991. My dad caught it on video.
