We’re into Week 2 of Bowl Season, and if some of these match-ups are really interesting, none of them quite have the sizzle of the big bowls a week from now.
It’s a shame Army missed the bid to the Independence Bowl. I’d quite liked to have seen a rematch of the Game of the Century.
As always, we’ve cut FCS match-ups from the list. I get that it’s FCS Playoffs, but they’re still outside the scope of what AFF is trying to cover. We’ve also listed the lines against their direction of movement. For example, UTSA at Army opened as a 2-point line and then slid to Army (+2.5). We therefore listed it on the Army side because Army (+2.5) is obviously a better bet than Army (+2).
College Football Schedule: Bowl Games (Part 1)
Friday, December 23rd
3:00 pm Independence Bowl: Houston (-7) vs. Louisiana (ESPN)
6:30 pm Gasparilla Bowl: Wake Forest (-1) vs. Missouri (ESPN)
Boy, the Independence Bowl nearly had the rematch of the century — Army vs. Houston II. Alas for what could have been.
The Gasparilla Bowl features an interesting match-up, but if Wake QB Sam Hartman is healthy, I’ll take him to hang 30 on a Mizzou team that’s been mediocre forever.

8:00pm Hawai’i Bowl: Middle Tennessee State vs. San Diego State (-7) (ESPN)
When this line opened, SDSU was somehow getting a point. Now they’re giving a touchdown to an MTSU, and honestly, I’d take them to cover. Friends, I’m afraid that the Blue Raiders are about to go into a wood-chipper.

2:30 pm Quick Lane Bowl: Bowling Green vs. New Mexico State (+3.5) (ESPN)
How in the Hell is this a bowl game? Gross. ESPN is legit scraping the bottom of the barrel for this one.

Tuesday, December 27th
12:00 pm Camellia Bowl: Buffalo (+3.5) vs. Georgia Southern (ESPN)
3:15 pm Guaranteed Rate Bowl: Oklahoma State (+3.5) vs. Wisconsin (ESPN)
6:45 pm First Responder Bowl: Memphis (-7.5) vs. Utah State (ESPN)
10:15 pm Birmingham Bowl: Coastal Carolina (+8.5) vs. East Carolina (ESPN)
A couple of interesting match-ups here alongside some decidedly weird lines. For example, CCY getting 8.5 against ECU in Birmingham is weird. QB Grayson McCall might be transferring, but he’s already said that he’s going to play in the bowl game.
That line strikes me as easy money.
Likewise, I know that Buffalo is not as good as they were a few years ago, but I still think I’d have made them favorites against GaSO.
Anyway. For those of you who won’t be skiing, this is a solid day of football.

Wednesday, December 28th
2:00 pm Military Bowl: Duke (-3) vs. UCF (ESPN)
5:30 pm Liberty Bowl: Arkansas (-3) vs. Kansas (ESPN)
8:00 pm Holiday Bowl: No. 15 Oregon vs. North Carolina (+14.5) (ESPN)
9:00 pm Texas Bowl: Texas Tech (+3.5) vs. Ole Miss (ESPN)
Gimme Duke to cover against UCF’s rushing defense. I’d like to see UNC play well against Oregon, too, but I don’t know if that’s the way I’d bet.

Thursday, December 29th
2:00 pm Pinstripe Bowl: Minnesota vs. Syracuse (+10) (ESPN)
5:30 pm Cheez-It Bowl: No. 13 Florida State vs. Oklahoma (+9.5) (ESPN)
9:00 pm Alamo Bowl: No. 12 Washington (+4) vs. No. 20 Texas (ESPN)
Any of these might be good games, but I’m personally most interested in the Pinstripe Bowl. Two good rushing teams playing in a game where the ground ought to feel like frozen concrete. I’ve always wanted to go to the Pinstripe Bowl, but not enough to pay $150 to sit in sub-freezing weather in late December.
Also, I really wish they’d put the Alamo Bowl on earlier in the day. Looks like a decent game, but some of us have to be in the office on Friday.
