Well friends, that sucked.
I don’t know if the Black Knights could’ve beaten Tulane had they not been off for the three weeks heading into this game, but they certainly couldn’t beat them with arguably the sloppiest start of the Monken Era, one that spotted the Green Wave two touchdowns, two extra points, and just over fifteen minutes of game time in what was always gonna be at best a close game.
I honestly don’t know what else to say. Army started a quarterback who hasn’t seen the field in over a month and who looked rusty as Hell, their defense looked lost through the first quarter and again briefly in third, and really, outside of a few strong runs from QB Tyhier Tyler, the team itself never had all that much going for it. The Black Knights fell behind early by two scores, missed an extra point, and from there on in, the Black Knights were a day late and a dollar short, chasing points and attempting desperation plays at every turn.
On balance, that was not a good idea.

This was most assuredly not the simplified offense that has set this team up for success these past few weeks. In its place, we got an overly cute attempt to fool guys rather than just knock their asses off the ball. Which sucks because Army did, in fact, knock Tulane back quite a bit when they ran right at them. But all the crazy crap never quite stuck despite the team rushing almost 150 yards in the second quarter and damn-near 200 in the first half. How the heck do you lose that badly when you put up almost two bills rushing in just one half? As it happens, it’s not as hard as it looks when you give the other guys a 14 point head start, never quite tie it, and then let them get fully in rhythm again to start the third quarter.
The good news for Army is that at least they played. That can only help, especially in a week in which some 15 games were cancelled because of the coronavirus. Moreover, the Army team was so bad this week that they might just inspire Air Force to play them after all during the regular season. I mean, I’m not holding my breath on that, but it’s possible. Finally, I am personally thankfully that the most rabid part of the fan base can *finally* shut up and quit worrying about whether or not Army ought to be ranked.
That, at least, is pretty clear.

So. Let’s move on. Burn the game tape, turn the page, and move forward. Willie Fritz owns Jeff Monken forever, but if you’re not actually living in Coach Monken’s household, I’d encourage you to let this one go. I guarantee that it matters more to him than it does to us, and anyway, there’s not much that any of us can do about it. Truth is, it’s bad policy to internalize things you’re basically just watching on TV.
Go Army! Beat Georgia Southern!!!
